Why a changeable ticket cannot be changed?

We understand it can be frustrating when a ticket that should allow changes turns out to be unchangeable. Here are the main reasons why this happens, even if the fare rules permit changes.

  • There are seats available, but no fares filed by airline
  • Change is limited to specific booking class
  • Ticket coupons are blocked
  • Ticket is partially used
  • Multiple changes can create restrictions
  • System limitations

There are seats available, but no fares filed by airline

The ticket price is set by the airline and made available to travel systems we use to book flights. Sometimes, even if there are seats available, the airline doesn’t allow us to change your ticket to those seats because the specific price or fare for changes isn’t available anymore. It means we cannot reprice the change—even if seats are technically available. This limitation affects changes, not new bookings. You may be able to purchase a new ticket, but not modify the existing one.

Change is limited to specific booking class

Your ticket is booked on a specific booking class. Airlines can specify the allowed classes for change in the fare rules. If there is no availability filed on the allowed classes, the change may not be possible. General seat availability does not guarantee availability in the specific booking class required to change your ticket.

Ticket coupons are blocked

In some cases, the ticket may be blocked or suspended due to disruptions, past changes, or technical issues, which means airline took ownership of the ticket and blocked it for agent’s actions. In such case, the ticket cannot be changed by the agent. We will have to ask the airline for the change. It will depend on the airline if they allow it.

Ticket is partially used

If your ticket is already partially used (e.g., you've flown one leg of the whole trip), fewer rebooking options may be available as the rules for change can be stricter - only valid for specific routes, dates, or booking classes. Also fare repricing becomes more complex. Some airlines even prohibit changes in cases the ticket is partially used.

Multiple changes can create restrictions

Tickets that have already been changed multiple times may have limitations. Past changes may have altered fare rules or conditions that now prevent further changes.++

System limitations

In rare cases, changes are technically allowed, but reservation system do not support pricing the change due to routing or tax complexities. This especially happens for itineraries involving multiple countries or airlines. In such case, it can require airline intervention and it will depend on the airline if change will be possible.

In case your ticket was affected by one of the above mentioned limitations and your preferred change is not possible, here is what can be done:

  • Consider a refund – in some cases, canceling the existing ticket and buying a new one may be more straightforward, even if it involves a penalty.
  • Check alternate dates or nearby airports
